Help wanted
Chief executive officer of a multi-million dollar municipal corporation.
You must have very strong managerial experience in either the public or private sector. If you have never run much more than a lemonade stand, please do not apply. This is not an entry level position for someone seeking experience for another job.
The job requires the ability to oversee very complicated contract negotiations; must deal with labor unions; oversee city employees working in diverse fields ranging from law enforcement, fire fighting, emergency medical, street and sidewalk repairs, and land-use permitting; oversee large projects such as a Salvation Army facility and possibly a move from Greater Cleveland RTA to extend train service. The Mayor of East Cleveland will make difficult decisions while operating transparently with public input.
This is a 24/7 job that can be thankless on occasion. You must always be “on” and avoid embarrassing comments or gestures that might be misinterpreted. The best candidates are those motivated by self-satisfaction for a job well done, but willing to acknowledge mistakes.

A candidate must have strong leadership abilities without being narcissistic. Humility is an absolute prerequisite. People will kowtow to you because they want something from you. You cannot take it seriously. You must listen and not be swayed by ego.
You must recognize that the basis for leadership is not your powers under the City Charter, but your power to convince others to join you. You must be willing to share credit, remembering always the dictum of Ronald Reagan: “There is no limit to the amount of good you can do if you don’t care who gets the credit.”
Sometimes, leadership does not appear in the headlines. Having said that, you must take responsibility for things that go bad, even if they were the fault of others who work under you. If you don’t recognize humility and the nature of leadership, you will fail.
A candidate for mayor must work well with others, but have a backbone. A candidate must be independent-minded and not be swayed by who supports or opposes something, but rather whether it is right for the municipal corporation and its shareholders, the people of East Cleveland Ohio.

Of course, you must obey the law. But, you must go beyond the letter of the law and avoid even the appearance of impropriety. Do not say or do anything that you would not want published on the front page of the local newspaper. You must set an example of honesty and integrity. Always keep your word.

Candidate interviews will be very important in the ultimate decision. If you speak in platitudes or rhetoric, you will be disqualified. We are not hiring a king or queen. We are hiring someone to run a $2 million municipal corporation. You must explain your experience for this job, your skills, and how you will organize and run the municipal corporation. And, don’t embellish your resume.

The interview committee will consist of thousands of people, many of whom you do not know. You are to be honest with them. Our city has been through a lot and it does not want to be smooth-talked. Our city deserves to be treated forthright.
