“When It Rains It Pours®” – No Rock Salt in EC

For the second year in a row East Cleveland did not take part in ordering Rock Salt for the winter season ahead. Last year this led to very few streets being salted and the two main streets Hayden and Euclid Avenues were a winter mess. Combine that with only one barely working salt truck on the road and winter was a cold mess for RTA bus drivers, automobile and walking citizen to get around town for simple things during heavy snow days.

In a way Mayor Norton and City Council should be applauded for not buying the tons of salt needed to fill up our storage shed. East Cleveland streets such as the Garfield and Lambert Avenue situation are going to be bad without any more damage from rock salt. Norton did manage to lease two new salt trucks and is expected to pay full rate for salt that could have been purchased at wholesale prices had we have ordered in the summer.

Winter 2013 EC Service Department experimented with cold patching some of the larger holes and that was not successful. Now taking this slogan from a well-known salt company “When It Rains It Pours®” in East Cleveland Ohio we have a few months left to patch up and pour asphalt on some of the major spots like the two small roads around Superior Elementary School. The large spot between Walgreen’s and the Laundromat on Euclid Avenue and for a start help the RTA drivers at Hayden Garage how about patching up that spot right at Hayden and Shaw corners.

Should the EC Service Crew take out the two new leased salt trucks and simply scrape the pothole filled streets without thinking everyone should prepare to replace tires, ball joints and front end steering.

In general based upon last winter this may be the time for residents to invest in four wheel drive vehicles like Mayor Gary “Durango” Norton just invested in as a city vehicle. Perhaps that is why the EC Mayor made sure his city car does not have city plates or anything that would make his visits to stores and places in Shaker Heights unnoticeable when snow keeps everyone in EC trapped at home.
